This interactive map tool combines to of the most popular drought condition datasets used in the United States: The Palmer Drought Index and the National Drought Monitor. These maps are useful to gardeners in planning drought tolerant gardens and in the selection of drought resistant plants and trees. The Palmer Drought Index is a measurement of dryness based on recent precipitation and temperature. The Palmer Index data is published weekly by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Plant Maps version of the Palmer Drought Index map is the only fully interactive version of the map available online. The National Drought Monitor map is produced weekly by the National Drought Mitigation Center and represents a combination of several different drought indices.
